Three Mid Coast Maine Lighthouses

In the 1800's the mid coast of Maine was a thriving economy for limestone, ship building and fishing.  The harbors in the area were bustling with business and a need for lighthouses arose.

On a visit in June 2017 we stopped at three of these lighthouses.

Marshall Point Lighthouse

In the photo at the top you see Marshall Point Lighthouse which stands in the harbor near the town of Port Clyde.  It is a very picturesque lighthouse and was fun to visit and photograph.  The long gangplank leading up to the lighthouse was seen in the movie Forest Gump.  You can read more about the lighthouse and Port Clyde in this article Review of Port Clyde

Owls Head Lighthouse

Owls Head lighthouse is located at the eastern edge of Rockland Harbor.  It sits high on a bluff and is a rather short, squatty looking lighthouse.  Stop by the article on Review This to read more about Owls Head Lighthouse.

Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse

The third lighthouse we visited was Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse.  It sits at the end of a 7/8  mile long granite breakwater that guards Rockland harbor.  This lighthouse is 25 feet tall and was first placed in service in 1902.  It still serves as a US Coast Guard navigational aid.

Portland Head Lighthouse- Beautiful by Land and Sea

On a recent cruise I was delighted when we passed close enough by Portland Head lighthouse so that I could get some photographs. This historic lighthouse was built in 1791 and is the oldest lighthouse in the state of Maine.  It is located in Cape Elizabeth Maine and sits on a piece of land at the entrance to the main shipping channel to Portland Maine.

I had been to the lighthouse several years ago and visited it from the land side.  At that time the fog was rolling in so I had to snap a few quick shots before the lighthouse was completely engulfed by the fog.  Here are a couple of the photos I took in 2005.

Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse

Hillsboro Inlet lighthouse is found near Pompano Beach, Florida. I first visited this lighthouse about 5 years ago with my granddaughter, Rachel. I found it to be a great lighthouse to photograph through the palm trees and I wrote a Squidoo page on the lighthouse. You can read it at Lighthouse Through the Palms
This year when we were staying in Jupiter, we took a drive down to Pompano Beach so that I could photograph the lighthouse again. I thought there might be a better angle to take the photographs, but I do believe the park across the inlet where I took my photos the first time is the best vantage point. Hillsboro lighthouse is a skeletal tower type of lighthouse with the bottom half being white and the top of the tower plus the lantern house being black. The lighthouse is 142 feet tall and was originally built in 1906-1907. It is a working lighthouse that is operated by the Coast Guard. It is only open to the public during tour dates. Jupiter Lighthouse at Night

I have just returned from a trip to Florida where I was able to set up my tripod and photograph the Jupiter lighthouse at night. There is a light reflecting at the lighthouse and I love the way you can see the light from the lens and the bright red lighthouse against the evening sky. You can see more of my Jupiter photos at my
